Every year Triple J Radio, which is based in Sydney, Australia, polls its listeners to compile the top 100 songs of the past year. The poll is the largest listener poll in the world, and over 1.1 million votes were cast this year. Boston's Passion Pit had two songs from their album "Manners" come in the top 100. "Little Secrets" came in at number 38, and "Sleepyhead" came in at number 20.

Here is the official video for "Sleepyhead" from YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zherMkcXdo

And in case you are wondering, "Little Lion Man" by the U.K. band Mumford and Sons was voted the number one song of 2009 by Triple J listeners.

Massachusetts will once again be represented at this year's Grammy(c) Awards, to be held this Sunday, January 31st. This year Rounder Records, which is based in Burlington, has four albums up for nomination. Comedian and movie star Steve Martin's first album, "The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo," and "Destination Life" by Rhonda Vincent, have both been nominated in the Best Bluegrass Album category. And Bela Fleck's "Throw Down Your Heart: Tales From the Acoustic Planet, Vol. 3 - Africa Sessions" has been nominated in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category. Rounder also has two nominations for Woody Guthrie's "My Dusty Road," one in the category of Best Album Notes, and the other in the category of Best Historical Album.

Also nominated for an award in the category of Best Traditional Blues Album is Duke Robillard's "Stomp! The Blues Tonight." The Grammys will be televised live from Los Angeles on CBS this Sunday beginning at 8pm Eastern.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The Boston band Vagiant has had to change its name to Tijuana Sweetheart for legal reasons. The all-girl punk band was nominated for Punk Act of the Year at the 2009 Boston Music Awards. The band is currently working on their name-change kickoff video, and their next live gig will be on Saturday, February 13th.

Western Mass. guitar legend John Sheldon will be hosting the "Masters of the Stratocaster" series at the Amherst Brewing Company every Thursday night, 9pm-midnight, beginning tonight, January 28th, and continuing throughout the spring. Every Thursday he will be playing solo or with another "Stratocaster Master." There is no cover, although you should get there early to get a seat.

Seth Glier has been spending time at Carriage House Studios just outside New York City recording the follow-up to his album "The Trouble With People." The album is being produced by Seth and Ryan Hommel and will have 12 original songs. It will also be on MPress Records, but according to Seth the release date will be "most likely in about a year."

Conventional wisdom said it would never happen, but when it comes to music never say never. Western Mass. garage rock legends The Malarians will be re-forming for one show only (at least for now) at the Sierra Grill in Northampton on Thursday, June 10th.

On Monday, January 25th the Department of Justice approved the controversial merger of Ticketmaster, the nation's dominant ticket seller, and LiveNation, the world's largest concert promoter. But to allay many people's fears that the merger would create a huge monopoly that would reach into every aspect of live shows, the DOJ attached a rather unusual condition. For the deal to proceed, the two companies agreed to create a pair of rivals to ensure a competitive market for ticket sales.

Under the agreement, Ticketmaster will give Anschutz Entertainment Group access to its technology so that AEG, which owns and manages nearly 100 venues, can create its own ticketing service. Ticketmaster would also be required to divest a subsidiary that provides software for venue operators to sell their own tickets. Comcast Corp.'s sporting events division, Comcast Spectacor, has signed a letter of intent to acquire the Irvine-based subsidiary, Paciolan. Live Nation Entertainment also is prohibited from retaliating against venue owners that defect to competitors.

In Boston, LiveNation and Ticketmaster handle shows at the Paradise Rock Club, The Orpheum Theatre, the House of Blues, and the Bank of America Pavillion.
