The Five College Early Music Program will be holding its patented Painless Auditions the first week of classes. These are open to students, faculty and members of the community. The relevant information follows. We would be grateful for any publicity you can provide.

The Five College Early Music Program welcomes students, faculty, and community members interested in auditioning to SING or PLAY in one or more ensembles, including the COLLEGIUM choir, BAROQUE ORCHESTRA (modern string players and adventurous pianists are encouraged to try this!) and chamber music, MEDIEVAL and RENAISSANCE ensembles and VOCES FEMINAE. The auditions are "painless" experiences, held at all the campuses. Performances sponsored by the program feature baroque and Renaissance music played on modern and period instruments and sung in historically-informed style. Consider beginning RECORDER, VIOLA DA GAMBA, LUTE or RENAISSANCE TROMBONE! We also offer instruction on period instruments (recorders, sackbut, viol, lute, etc.) for modern players, in beginning ensembles and lessons. Credit is available for ensembles and lessons for MHC, UMass and HC.

Easthampton, MA (date): For the past four years, Easthampton resident and documentary filmmaker Meagan Murphy and her team have worked to create The Breast Archives, a groundbreaking documentary about women and their breasts. The film features nine women, most of whom were filmed with their breasts exposed. In a series of interviews, they explore, critique and celebrate the complex role of the breasts and their role in body image, health and social identity.

Private screenings of the film have been met with inspired and thoughtful dialogue. When the lights come up, audiences are moved to share how the internalization of media images, religion and cultural contexts have influenced their relationships with their bodies and one another. The enthusiastic testimony isn’t limited to breast-havers: men often rave that The Breast Archives has connected them more deeply with the experiences and feelings of their partners.

Murphy is hopeful that the local community will support the film and its aim of engaging all people in a liberating, compassionate and expanded relationship with breasts. The honesty and generosity of the nine women in the film empowers all women to resist and rise above the media’s demands that our womanhood be conformist and that our breasts be perfectly formed, exclusively sexual or solely nurturing.

As the project plans for its first public showing, Murphy is launching an ambitious IndieGoGo fundraising campaign on September 14th in order to raise funds to market the film internationally.

Li’l BeeDee & the Doo-Rites

WENDELL, Mass. – Performing & raising funds to benefit the Community Network for Children this month at the Wendell Full Moon Coffeehouse will be Li’l BeeDee & the Doo-Rites, a 5-piece combo that serves up rockabilly, rhythm & blues. The band features Betsy-Dawn Williams (Li’l BeeDee), who is known for her membership in honky tonk band Girl Howdy. This incarnation of Williams’ musical persona is centered on old-school rhythm blues with an infusion of rockabilly and she says the mission statement of the Doo-Rites is “to do ya right!” In 2004 European indie-roots label El Toro Records released her first CD “Rocket Girl” showcasing Williams’ songwriting, which has earned rave reviews worldwide. Fellow Doo-Rites band member and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Potter, who has his own album on the label, also played on the record and co-produced with Williams.

Li’l BeeDee’s backing band – the Doo-Rites - consists of Jeff Potter on piano, who has for the last handful of years been playing piano for Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson, as part of the Lustre Kings – a crew of rockabilly cats based in upstate New York. Potter comes with a litany of recordings himself on various respected rockabilly labels including Raucous Records in England and El Toro Records in Spain. Boston’s own Frankie Blandino is in the lead guitar seat, no stranger to the genre himself, having proved his instrumental prowess in several well-known Boston-based bands such as The Fathoms, The Crank-tones and The Spurs. Brian Rost is on bass guitar, and also plays with Williams in GiRL HOWDY, and has played with the Tarbox Ramblers, and Rufus Thomas. In the drum chair is Doug Hinman, who also plays with Blandino in the Fathoms, and is a noted author & music historian to boot, with two published books on the works of the Kinks.

The Wendell Full Moon Coffeehouse is in the Wendell Town Hall, on 6 Center Street, next to the Police Station on the only one-way street in town. The show will start with an open mic at 7:30pm, with Li’l BeeDee & the Doo-Rites starting at 8pm.

Changes In Latitudes, the nation’s premier Jimmy Buffett tribute show, will be playing a “Between The Holidays Bash” at the Pulaski Club in Easthampton on Thursday December 29 at 7:00 PM. Tickets for the show are $10 at the door. Doors will open at 6:00 PM for the pre-concert party.

Changes In Latitudes authentically recreates all of the sight, sounds and sensations of a real Jimmy Buffett concert, bringing a taste of Margaritaville to audiences wherever they go. The Smith College Festival of Sound and Space focuses on improvisation through the fusion of live electronics and violin to create a new and unique “sonic stew” in the work of Sam Pluta and Jim Altieri’s “sum and difference”.

Northampton, MA. The Smith College Festival of Sound and Space presents an evening of improvised music with Sam Pluta and Jim Altieri. "Sum and Difference" fuses live electronics and violin into an hour-long performance featuring microtonal drones, noise, custom electronic interfaces, and more.

Sam Pluta and Jim Altieri have been improvising together in various formations for the past six years. As founding members of the improv quintet GBL, Pluta and Altieri merged microtonal violin drones with electronic noise to create a new and unique sonic stew. In 2011 they combined with trumpeter Peter Evans to create the album sum and difference, released on Carrier Records.

Sam Pluta is a New York City-based composer and improviser working in the fields of acoustic and electronic music. He is Technical Director for the Wet Ink Ensemble, a new music group dedicated to the performance of new works by young composers as well as the best works of the American and European avant-garde. He has been commissioned and premiered by Wet Ink Ensemble, Yarn/Wire, ICE, Timetable Percussion, RIOT Trio, So Percussion, Dave Eggar, and Prism Saxophone Quartet and has performed internationally as a laptop soloist and chamber musician. As a founding member of the improvising quartet GBL and performing with groups like the Peter Evans Quintet, he has focused in recent years on fusing the worlds of acoustic and electronic instruments through improvisation. A devoted pedagogue, aside from his teaching duties as faculty fellow at Columbia University, he holds the John Plude Faculty Chair in Computer Musicianship at the Walden School. His music is released on quiet design and Carrier Records, a label he runs with Jeff Snyder and David Franzson.

Jim Altieri loves listening. Through his music and software, he tries to share this love with other listeners. Based in New York City, Jim is an active composer, violinist, and accordionist. His own music often uses the harmonies and rhythms of the harmonic series and explores the relationship between attention and awareness. He is a founding member of GBL and plays violin and accordion in the folk-rock band Tatters and Rags.

The Smith College Festival of Sound & Space: four shows featuring artists who explore space and sound through their innovative performances. The concerts will all take place in Helen Hills Hills Chapel on the campus of Smith College.

The 2011–12 series has a special focus on improvisation, the practice of which — particularly when presented within a space designed for liturgy and ritual — speaks directly to our notions of space in a figurative sense through our perception of emotional space, metaphorical space, and musical/dramatic structure. The process of creating music in real time creates an experience of exploration that is shared by the performers and the audience, with the physical space acting as an additional collaborator.

The artists on this series approach concepts of space and collaboration in a variety of ways, with two shows dedicated entirely to improvisatory practices (sum and difference & Curiosity is Gravity), and with aspects of the other two shows ( (( ( PHONATION ) )) and Greg Brown) incorporating improvistory practices as well.

Greg Brown of the Smith College Music Dept. serves as founding artistic director and organizer. This festival is produced in collaboration with the Smith College Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, Jennifer Walters, Dean.

Have you always wanted to be able to play congas and percussion? Now you can learn how, at Estudio ‘El Bohio’ in Hadley, MA. Brandon Marger teaches the authentic instruments and rhythms of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil and other parts of the West African diaspora in the Americas. The curriculum covers both traditional folkloric rhythms, and applications to modern musics such as pop, jazz, funk, salsa, reggae and more.

You will learn the proper technique for creating a palette of sounds on the drum; the traditional rhythmic repertoire of the congas; as much or as little music theory and notation as is necessary, and applications of what we study in the class to real-life playing situations.

Brandon Marger has studied at the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba La Habana, and at the Balé Folclórico da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil, as well as with master percussionists here in the New England area. For more than two decades he has been gigging with a wide variety of bands throughouth the US and the Caribbean, and has also been accompanying Afro-Latin dance classes. Brandon’s extensive experience as a performing musician is one of the cornerstones of his teaching.

Brandon Marger has been teaching Afro-Latin drumming and percussion since 1991 in both ensemble classes and private lessons. He has also taught special workshops at many of the region’s colleges. Brandon teaches students of all ability levels, from people with no previous musical training to veteran musicians who are looking to learn something new.

On most days Roger Salloom has come to believe that “community” is a sacred word. That being said, this 28 year tradition has good wishes for a head start in that direction.

The longest running free concert in Northampton Massachusetts’ history happens again simply because Roger Salloom keeps doing it and the people keep coming. 28 years is longer than a number of the business in Northampton have been running and definitely longer lived than most of the live music venues.

On Aug. 27, 2011, Roger Salloom will bring his 8 piece band into the Academy of Music at 7:00pm. The horn section will have featured artist, and Grammy award winner, Charles Neville (The Neville Bros., BB King, James Brown, Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Reed et al).

Opening will be The Chandler Travis Philharmonic, then newcomer Jamie Kent who reappears after a striking set last year. Joining Roger’s band will be the young, gifted and beautiful Jessica Freeman who has just completed a set at New Orleans’ most prestigious jazz club, Snug Harbor. Also, folks will hear the tasty Barbara Ween on vocals. In the back doing all the heavy lifting with be JD (Jeff Dostal) on bass, Dave Lincoln on drums, Tom Filiault and Joe Boyle on lead guitars.

AMHERST, MA: Award-winning activist songwriters Emma’s Revolution and Appleseed recording artists Kim and Reggie Harris headline a star-studded lineup performing on the Amherst Common next month, 11am to 7pm, Sunday, July 10 at the first-ever Common Good Festival. There is no charge for admission.

Emma's Revolution's best known work, "Peace, Salaam, Shalom", is sung around the world and has been called the "anthem of the anti-war movement." As Pete Seeger said of their latest CD: "This record is part of the worldwide revolution which will save this planet..."

Kim and Reggie Harris have brought their warm and exciting performances of music rooted in the African-American experience from the Underground Railroad through the Civil Rights movement to such venues as Washington DC's Kennedy Center, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Smithsonian Institute, and even a festival in Austria.

Other performers also include Grammy-winning Native American flute player Joseph FireCrow, local reggae band Rebel Alliance, and award-winning activist songwriter Tom Neilson.

In addition, the festival will feature local sustainability and social justice activist groups and businesses, craft vendors, cooperative games, children's activities, a magician and more. Magician Jeff Pyzocha is sure to astound and amaze audiences of all ages.

The event will raise awareness of Common Good Finance, a nonprofit organization working to bring real democracy to communities in Western Massachusetts and throughout the country. The organization employs four full-time staff and calls itself "a revolution with a bank", because its proposal centers on member ownership of Common Good Bank, a planned alternative to the badly managed megabanks that came close to destroying the US economy in 2008.

Unlike other banks, Common Good Bank will offer community members full local control and a true voice in their financial future: every member will have an equal vote in setting policy, from creating lending guidelines to determining distribution of profits. Founded by William Spademan of Ashfield, Common Good Finance has launched a grassroots membership campaign to finance the bank, which will provide a full range of conventional FDIC-insured banking services to area residents and business owners.

"Money decides what happens in the world. If we want to save our communities and our planet, we have to control the money. We need to stop waiting for someone else to fix the economy -- and take responsibility for it ourselves," said Spademan, who has spent nine years developing the project. "At the festival, we will give people a glimpse of the Common Good Economy -- and offer the community some great music and a whole lot of fun at the same time."

Mutton and Mead, Montague's Medieval Festival, seeks Actors, Singers, Dancers, Minstrels, and other creative types at an audition and open house on Sunday, January 23rd, 2011, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Montague Grange hall, for "THIEVES OF HONOR" a Robin Hood-themed Renaissance Faire to be held on June 18th in Turners Falls, MA.

Actors should come with a two-minute monologue and be prepared to participate in some improvisational activities. Not looking for a major role? We are also seeking extras for "depth and color" and will provide training. If you sing or play an instrument please bring it and a song to present.


Not an actor, but still interested in helping bring our medieval village to life? Mutton and Mead is also seeking volunteers, crafts-people, merchants, theater crew, designers and carpenters, independent acts, interns and staff. Just contact us or stop by on audition day. There are several Managerial spots available as well, for those who like to work on these types of events.

Are you some other creative type? Our hope is that Mutton and Mead will provide a venue for the community. We welcome your ideas on how we can make that happen. We hope to see you or hear from you too.

You can't imagine how often I have gone back and forth on whether or not to keep doing the Weekly Band E-Mail.

My current health situation is very complicated. Without going into all of the gory details, let's just say that I am more like that little creature from Middle Earth who is crawling around the cover of Led Zeppelin III. I am unable to stand up or walk anywhere without either Meg or one of my two kids literally holding my hands and taking me to another part of the house.

Fortunately I have six (yes, you read correctly) different doctors who are all helping me cope with all of this. The latest fear is that my kidneys are starting to fail, and I am going to have a blood test for that on Wednesday afternoon.

During the three years I have been doing this thing, all my readers have stayed with me, even when I was in the hospital and then in rehab for four months last summer. And Mik Muller has been supremely generous in allowing me to continue to post the Weekly Band E-Mail on hampmusic.com

I first saw a local group, called the Bitter End, play live at the Church in the Cove in the Montserrat section of Beverly back in 1967, and from then on I was hooked. I would go see local groups play all over the North Shore, especially at St. Adelaide's Church in Peabody, the Upbeat Teen Club in Beverly, and Someplace in Gloucester. I also used to follow certain bands around, including Teddy and the Pandas, Twelve-76, Blueberry Earth, and Royal Aircoach.

I had a radio show every Saturday afternoon on WMLO, 1570 AM in Beverly, during which time I would play as much local music as I could get my hands on at Hayes Music on Cabot Street.

I answered the phones for the Listener Line at both WBCN and WCOZ between 1970 and 1980. During the week I would go into the city and go to see local bands at the Rat, Cantones, and Bunratty's. I would buy used CDs at the record store which was next to Oona's Used Clothing by the huge Chinese restaurant that was on Mass. Ave on the left as you were going from Central Square to Harvard Square.

When I first moved in with Meg in Somerville in 1981, I used to listen to Rich Anzalone's radio show every night on 101.7FM in Lynn. About six months after I started listening, what was then WLYN-FM was bought by Stephen Mindich and turned into WFNX, and the local music that Rich used to play every night was basically gone.

But thankfully Maxanne Sartori, who did afternoons at WBCN, let Oedipus, who was not program director yet, have about 15 minutes of her show to play the music he had heard from local bands the night before. So there was always somewhere you could hear all the great local music of the time, and of course back then there were many many record stores where you could buy all of it.

And I remember a guy named Hugh Munox had a local music show called Metronome on WERS, 88.9FM, every Sunday night, and he would have a band play live every week, much like Jeff Breeze does on Pipeline! on WMBR nowadays. Not sure when Metronome was on, but I remember listening to it when I was living with Meg in Somerville.


When Meg and I moved to the 413 area code in 1987, the first thing I did was go down to WMUA and get a weekly radio show (Jim Neill was my first program director). I did all kinds of music shows at WMUA, including the Grateful Dead hour! But sometime in the mid 1990s Mal Thursday began doing a local music show every week, and his enthusiasm for the music sparked a desire in me to do a similar show on WMUA some years later.

My health forced my retirement from WMUA. But it also gave me the freedom to be able to re-invent the Weekly Band E-Mail back in mid-August of 2007. And now, some three years later, I am afraid to say that once again my health is forcing me to give up the Weekly Band E-Mail, effective immediately.

So there you go, there you have it. I appreciate all the feedback you have given me over the years. Even the most offhand of suggestions have resulted in the adoption of changes in the Weekly Band E-Mail. I will continue to support Massachusets bands and musicians by buying the CDs when available, or downloading digital copies of the CDs on iTunes if I am unable to. Thank you for the memories.

Welcome to the new, stripped-down edition of the Weekly Band E-Mail. Because of my rapidly deteriorating health, there will no longer be a LISTINGS edition. Instead, there will be this format, which will call your attention to important shows and festivals coming up in the next seven days, along with news and information about Massachusetts bands, musicians, and venues. I will take out the venues that are obviously not having shows this time of year, but will include the information about how to contact the venues that are operating, leaving it up to you to check out their website to see who is playing when and how much a show is.

So here is what will get in and will not get in from now on.

The Weekly Band E-Mail will still be about Massachusetts bands, musicians, and venues ONLY. I never could understand why people who send out press releases from indie labels in Texas and other places didn't get that. It's always been like that since I began doing it in August 2007. Just because your artist is playing at, say, Club Passim in Cambridge next month, so what? So are a zillion other acts, all of which think they are just as good if not better than your act.

But now that I will no longer be including listings, I am asking bands, musicians, and venues to take me off their lists of where they are playing. Here is a rough idea of what will and will not get in.

If you are a band or a musician and decide to take six months off, that will get in.
If you are a band or musician that is part of a benefit show, send me the details and that will get in. If you are a band that is getting back together for the first time in 10, 20, or 30 years, send me the details and that will get in.

If you are a venue and have a huge show coming up, that will get in.
If you are a venue and have a tribute to Tom Petty or a show like the recent TransPERVformance or the Night at the Zoo shows at the Elevens in Northampton, send me the info and that will get in. If you are the Palladium in Worcester and have the Rock and Shock weekend coming up, that will get in.

Here are a couple of examples of what will be in next Wednesday night's edition. Jenny Dee will be having La La Brooks of The Crystals singing with her band at the Ponderosa Stomp in October. The great Moonalice, which is comprised of many of the best members of bands from the 1960s, will be playing at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River in November. The results of the Valley Advocate readers poll will be announced. (Even being nominated for one of the 27 categories is an honor, so there are no losers.) Kid:Nap:Kin is taking six months off. The Neighborhoods just released a CD of a show from the 1970s recorded at the Rat.

The really big show this week is Wormtown Trading Company's Wormtown Music Festival. There will be over 70 bands including Seed, which won the Battle of the Bands at the Elevens in Northampton on Thursday, August 26th..

Wormtown Trading Company presents the Wormtown Music Festival at Camp KeeWanee in Greenfield for three days and nights beginning this Friday, September 17th. Jimi Hendrix, who many consider to be one of the top guitarists of all time, died on September 18th, 1970. All this weekend, the Regent Theatre in Arlington will present an exclusive Jimi Hendrix film and concert tribute, celebrating the rock icon's unsurpassed music, mastery, and magic.

There will be two double features on Friday night and Sunday night. On Friday night, September 17th, "American Landing - Live at Monterey" (1967) will be shown at 7:30pm, and "Live at Woodstock" (1969) will be shown at 9pm On Sunday night, September 19th, "Jimi Plays Berkeley" (1970) will be shown at 7:15pm, and "Wild Blue Angel - Live at the Isle of Wight Festival" (1970) will be shown at 8:30pm.

Also as part of this tribute weekend, the Regent will be hosting a special combination live concert and film screening on Saturday, September 18th. Thaddeus Hogarth, singer/songwriter/guitar virtuoso and associate professor of guitar at Boston's Berklee College of Music, will be performing the music of Jimi Hendrix live on the Regent Theatre stage beginning at 8pm. Joining Mr. Hogarth will be David Buda (of The Boston Pops) on bass and Joey Scrima on drums. The Thaddues Hogarth Trio will perform two sets.

This will be followed by a special late-night screening of the 1973 Warner Brothers film biography of Jimi Hendrix, which provides a revealing snapshot of his early years and entire career with candid interviews alongside still more concert and behind-the scenes footage.

Irwin Silber, who as founding editor of the small but influential magazine Sing Out became a towering figure in the 1960s American folk music renaissance that brought Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie and numerous others to prominence, has died at age 84. He died on Wednesday, September 8th at an extended care facility in Oakland, California. His stepdaughter Nina Menendez said the cause of death was complications related to Alzheimer's disease.

Silber founded Sing Out in 1950 with legendary folk singer Pete Seeger and musicologist Alan Lomax. He also published more than a dozen books, wrote for several other publications and produced numerous folk music concerts.

At Sing Out, he worked on a shoestring budget, noting in 2001 that most of the time he collected only half of his $50 weekly salary. Nonetheless, he built the magazine into a bible of American folk music, reporting on such seminal figures as Seeger, Guthrie, Leadbelly, and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. As a result, when a new generation of folk singers burst onto the music scene in the early 1960s, he was perfectly positioned to cover them. Sing Out carried some of the earliest reports on Dylan, Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others.

The Los Angeles Times' online music blog Pop and Hiss is reporting that the three surviving members of Buffalo Springfield will be re-uniting to perform at Neil Young's 24th annual Bridge School concerts in northern California on Saturday, October 23rd and Sunday, October 24th.

Also performing on Saturday, October 23rd will be Pearl Jam, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson, Jackson Browne with David Lindley, Billy Idol, Modest Mouse, and Grizzly Bear. Also performing on Sunday, October 24th will be Elton John and Leon Russell, who will be part of T Bone Burnett's Speaking Clock Revue, also featuring Ralph Stanley, Neko Case, Elvis Costello, and "Crazy Heart" film star Jeff Bridges. All acts will perform unplugged in keeping with the tradition of the concerts.

Buffalo Springfield was born as a country-rock band in 1966. Bass player Bruce Palmer died in 2004, and drummer Dewey Martin died in 2009.

Proceeds from the yearly shows go to benefit Neil Young's Bridge School, which generates funds and awareness for the school's programs aiding severely physically handicapped students. Neil Young has three children, Zeke and Ben, who were diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and daughter Amber Jean who, live Young himself, has epilepsy.

The Bridge School concerts are held every year at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster this coming Sunday, September 19th.

The next seven days probably has the most amount of shows of the year. No matter where you live in the Commonwealth, there is bound to be a live show that will interest you. I will try to break everything down for you.

While I'm at it, I will also warn you of the Extreme Makeover I had to do to the LISTINGS edition of the Weekly Band E-Mail. I know it shifts the burden to the reader to find out details of shows, but it was becoming more than I could handle. With that said, take a deep breath and read onward.

Everybody in western Mass. is buzzing about the surprise re- reunion of Mal Thursday and The Malarians. The band will be playing at the Sierra Grille in Northampton tonight, Thursday, September 9th at 10pm. Admission is $3, and it is a 21+ show. The Malarians will also be a part of the 30th anniversary show of the ZONE Arts Center at the Canal Gallery in Holyoke on Saturday, September 11th. More on that show below.

The Rosebud Bar, which is behind the Rosebud Diner in Davis Square in Somerville, has a great lineup this weekend. On Thursday, September 9th at 9pm is Andrea Gillis. On Friday, September 10th at 8:30 pm is Muck and the Mires, Jay Allen and the Arch Criminals, and The Dirty Truckers. And on Saturday, September 11th at 8:30pm is 28 Degrees Taurus, Magic Shoppe, and Miars. Admission is $5 at the door, and the Rosebud is a 21+ venue.

This summer's series of concerts at Mountain Park in Holyoke end with two shows this weekend. On Friday, Sept 10th will be The Disco Biscuits, RJD2, and Mimosa. Gates are at 4:30pm, and the show begins at 6pm. Tickets are $27.50 And the final show will be on Monday, September 13th, with Vampire Weekend, Beach House, and Dum Dum Girls. Gates are at 5:30pm, and the show begins at 7pm. Tickets are $32.50.

All children must have tickets and be accompanied by an adult. You may buy tickets online in advance at http://www.iheg.com/
However, if you wait until the day of the show, you must pay cash for tickets and concessions. There is no ATM at Mountain Park.

There will be a special benefit show at the Moose Lodge in Salem (Mass) this Friday, September 10th, 6-11pm. Performing will be Revolver and Cocaine Tongue. All proceeds from this event will go towards a rollaway ramp, a vehicle for transport, and other vital equipment needed for the care of 8 year old Tanis Price, who has been afflicted with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy. The fifth annual New England Blues Festival will be at Battis Field in Middleborough on Saturday, September 11th. Gates open at 11am, and music begins at 12noon. Performing will be Wolf and the Jam Daddies, Bogged Down, Wood Spirit Band, Mark T. Small, and the Dan Lawson Band. General admission tickets are $25 at the gate, although you will receive $5 off if you donate a coat or a jacket. The huge Life is Good(r) Festival will be held at Prowse Farm in Canton on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th. There will be three stages each day. Performers on the Life is Good stage include Mavis Staples, Ozomatli, Ziggy Marley, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Guster, and Jason Mraz. Performers on the Good Vibes stage include Will Dailey and the Rivals, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Toubab Krewe, OK Go, and Corinne Bailey Rae. The Life is Good Kids Foundation helps kids overcome life-threatening challenges such as violence, illness and extreme poverty. The Playmakers Initiative provides training, resources and support to the adults dedicated to caring for these children so that all involved lead healthier, more joyful lives.

Every year from 2004-2009, a Life is Good Festival was held to benefit Project Joy, a unique and innovative grassroots nonprofit. Project Joy had been addressing early childhood trauma through the healing power of play for over twenty years, building a community of committed Playmakers — frontline childcare professionals dedicated to the healthy development of children in need. The more Life is Good experienced this nonprofit's joyful approach and talented staff, the more they felt a kinship between the organizations. And the more they saw its transformative impact on the lives of children, the more they were wholeheartedly committed to advancing its work.

Organizers say "We signaled that commitment in a historic and dramatic way in early 2010 as we officially joined forces. Project Joy is now part of the Life is Good Kids Foundation, becoming the active service arm to carry out the Foundation's mission. Together we can transform a generation of kids sidelined by personal trauma into enthusiastic players in the game of life."

Starlab at 32 Prospect Street in Somerville will be having an End of Summer Bash this Saturday, September 11th. The day begins with a yard sale at 12:30pm, and music beginning at 4pm. Performing will be Movers and Shakers, Viva Viva, Needy Visions, The Cold Beat, and Banditas. A donation of $5-$10 will be requested.

Back in July Somerville’s Starlab practice space and recording studio had a fund raising BBQ and outdoor show to help raise money to knock out some debt and fancy up the place after water damaged the basement back in the spring. That first BBQ raised $1,500, and this Saturday's BBQ hopes to raise just as much, although it will be up against some stiff competition.

The Lizard Lounge in Cambridge will have Willbury's Weekend on Friday, September 10th and Saturday, September 11th.. Brendan Boogie will br Roy Orbison, Jason Dunn will be George Harrison, Kingsley Flood will be Bob Dylan, Mercy James will be Jeff Lynne, and Spirit Kid will be Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Each person/band will transform themselves into their persona for a set, and then the night will close with a fantasy set by the [Traveling] Willlburys.

There is a new brick-and-mortars record store in Northampton. It is called Feeding Tube Records, and is at 90 King Street in Northampton. Feeding Tube already has a store at 150 Pleasant Street, Suite 235, in Easthampton, where owner Ted Lee has been selling used vinyl, 7" records, and cassette tapes, much like Mystery Train in Amherst does.

The King Street store will open on Friday, September 10th at 10am. It will mainly be a distribution point for new vinyl, but will also carry used stuff like the Easthampton store does. For more information, go to their website, http://www.feedingtuberecords.com/

There will be several in-store acoustic performances at both Mystery Train Records in Amherst and Feeding Tube Records in Northampton in the next few weeks, with details to come.

With a national release on August 10, "Many Hands: Family Music for Haiti" is the first release from Spare the Rock Records. This unique collection of songs is filled with uplifting messages from some of today’s very best family musicians. After the January 12th, 2010 earthquake that destroyed much of the Haitian capital, family musician Dean Jones (Dog on Fleas) found himself feeling helpless and desperately wanting to help the people of Haiti. Having close friends in Haiti and feeling a deep love and respect for the music from the region, Jones felt the need to create something that could help the ongoing rebuilding effort.

The idea for Many Hands came to him in the middle of the night, and the very next day several of his fellow family musicians signed on. “When I had the idea for the Many Hands CD, I knew without a doubt that I could count on the big-hearted kindie community.” said Jones. “The generosity and the amazing work of all the musicians and everyone involved definitely exceeded my initial expectations.”

Almost all of the tracks on the album are previously unreleased, most of them recorded especially for this release. The gathering of artists featured here is a strong assortment of the unique and special talents creating and performing for today’s all ages audiences, from the legendary Pete Seeger to family hip-hop star Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. In addition, everyone involved in the process of getting this album out into the world from replication to distribution has also either drastically discounted or donated their services. Proceeds from this release will benefit the Haitian People’s Support Project and their long-standing work to help the people of Haiti.

"Many Hands" is the debut album of Spare the Rock Records, founded by kindie rock connoisseur Bill Childs. “After speaking with Dean it was immediately obvious to me that this would be a great record, and, just as importantly, that it would have the potential to help keep people’s attention on the ongoing recovery of Haiti,” recalls Childs on how the partnership came to fruition. “Dean asked for some help reaching out to a few artists, and that just naturally flowed into my helping the record get a wider release; ultimately, that meant starting a label.”

Childs produces, with his kids, the weekly radio show Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child, which is heard every Saturday morning, 7-9am, on Valley Free Radio, WXOJ-LP, 103.3FM in Northampton, and every Saturday morning, 8-10am, on WRSI, 93.9FM in Northampton. Bill also writes about kids’ music for various parenting magazines and has produced numerous kids’ concerts and is the co-founder of KindieFest, the family music conference.

The three co-owners of the Paradise Rock Club - Bob Dunne, Declan Mehigan of Old Trafford Inc., and Don Law's Boston Opera House Ventures LLC - have spent close to $500,000 renovating the 33-year-old club. The chief complaint of both the bands and the audience over the years has been a large pole that was directly in front of the lead singer.

Since the pole could not be moved because it was basically holding the structure up, it was decided to build a brand new stage 15 feet to the left as the audience views it. The main entrance was also moved closer to Agganis Way. Renovations took three months, and the Paradise re-opened on Wednesday, September 1st with a show featuring Marina and the Diamonds..

A new six-song EP from Winterpills will be available on the Signature Sounds label on Tuesday, October 5th. The EP is titled "Tuxedo of Ashes." Tommy Allen and Sarah Cronin, who together make up the Boston band Drug Rug, need a new van. Here is the notice that Tommy and Sarah sent to their fans and to BBC:

Dear People of Earth,

We are a band with a dream. We have been blessed with the opportunity to live this dream. All that is missing is the dream mobile.

Back in early February, our old van, Pee-Wee was on his last legs. He had many problems that were unfortunately too expensive for us to fix. We had to leave Pee Wee at the junkyard.

Since then, we have had to spend money on rental vans in order to tour, making it impossible to save up for a new van of our own. As of yet, with no vehicle to depend on, we are unable to make plans to tour in the future.

We want to keep doing what we love. We want to be able to share our music with the rest of the country! This is where you come in. We need your help, the help of our fans. We can't do this without you guys!

1. Who is one of your favorite up and coming bands in Boston?

Have you heard the Jinx Bros? They play Delta/Piedmont blues. Sometimes the duo employs a washtub! I love seeing young guys playing an old style of music. Steve and Eric are such great performers and always get the crowd jumpin’.

2. What makes the Boston music scene great?

Our history and our reverence to it. The ’80s and ’90s rockers beget the early 2000s rockers. The 2000s rockers beget the electronic and DJ culture that we see now. New bands are growing up being influenced by what’s happened here. Reunions are abound. Bands I never thought I’d see play again are hitting it full force and it’s hard to keep up with all of the new projects! In the last year I’ve seen The Prime Movers, The Satanics, Orchestra Morphine, Treat Her Right

The F.U.'s and Roadsaw. Also, I’ve been at practically every Viva Viva show. Bands like Doomstar! are branching out into new but familiar territory. This is an exciting time. Almost everyone’s a DJ, including myself, and it’s fun to hear people with great taste spin their favorite tunes.

3. How did you end up in Boston?

I grew up in Abington, on the South Shore of Massachusetts. I studied at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, for a BFA in the Studio for Interrelated Media(SIM). SIM is a diverse program, close to an open major but not quite. I directed my own study in SIM toward spoken word performance, graphic design, event production, video, and painting. I saw my professor at a video event for another SIM graduate recently. I pulled him aside and said, “I’ve finally woken up, all of the work I did in SIM directly pointed me in the direction of this career path I am on, thank you”. I’ve been in Boston since I’ve graduated, playing in bands, working in book publishing (another passion of mine), and making the most of my time in this universe.

4. What invention are you waiting for?

Time Machine. I’m a comic book guy. Almost all cool comics incorporate a time machine. I’d be even more stoked if it looked like Jack Kirby drew it!

5. What is your motto?

One day at a time.

6. What is one of your favorite spots in Boston to get ice cream?

My favorite frozen yogurt store is Berry Line in Harvard Square. Watermelon with fresh kiwi on top, with Hershey’s syrup. That’s what’s up.

7. Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Seth Green. I’m watching Buffy from the beginning. Just started Season 3.

8. How do you find new music?

I’ve got a great network of friends that suggest I check something out. Also, when I’m at shows I pay attention to the opening bands. That’s the talent pool!

9. Who is one of your favorite bands?

The Hellacopters — Sweeden's best KISS and soul-influenced rock and roll band.

10. If you were doing something else for work, what would it be?

Writing, drawing, coloring, or lettering comic books.

11. What's the song for your life's soundtrack this year?

Cassidy – “Gotta Get My Paper Up” Not because I’m rolling in the dough; but just because this is such a fun summer jam. Crazy hook, and a Naughty By Nature “hey…ho.”

Fans of the late John Lennon will undoubtedly commemorate what would have been his 70th birthday on October 9th, 2010 in a variety of ways, but one of the most unique tributes will come from fellow musicians, namely the folk/rock artists Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step and Tom Dean of Devonsquare. Together, they have produced "Imagined: The John Lennon Song Project," a thoughtfully re-imagined tribute that celebrates the genius and artistry of John Lennon.

The "Imagined" CD combines a number of Lennon's songs in new and unexpected ways, weaving melody, lyric and song together in a series of single songs and mini-medleys. The CD also features Dean's former band mate Alana MacDonald and a host of talented musicians who provide backing on acoustic and electric guitars, bass, cello, violin, mandolin, accordion, chromatic harmonica and percussion. The CD is scheduled for release on John Lennon's 70th birthday, October 9th, 2010.

In conjunction with the release of the CD, Imagined: The John Lennon Song Project live concert will be touring this fall and throughout 2011, and will be stopping at the Regent Theatre in Arlington on Saturday, October 9th at 8pm. Aztec Two-Step burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album on Elektra Records in 1972. Since then, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman have spend a lifetime making music together as the folk/rock duo Aztec Two Step.

As their recording career continued, so did the critical acclaim. In 1987, "Living in America" received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album, and was named in Billboard Magazine's year-end critics poll. Of their 2005 release, "Days of Horses," The Boston Globe said "fans of the duo's harmony-driven tunes and easygoing acoustic guitar riffs will recognize their James Taylor-meets-Simon and Garfunkel sound. What's new is the mood. This album sits back on its haunches as Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman look back wistfully at American pop culture and their own ride through it." In June 2007, Real Simple, a popular national lifestyle magazine, named Aztec Two-Step one of the top five classic folk albums, joining work by Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Tom Rush and Phil Ochs. The article cites the duo as "surpass(ing) Simon and Garfunkel for exquisite harmonies, musicianship and emotion." Aztec Two Step continues to be one of acoustic music's most popular and enduring acts.

For 20 years, Dean, MacDonald, and Herb Ludwig toured the U.S. and Europe and released five CDs. A devoted fan base followed these three musicians from coast to coast to hear the shimmering three-part harmonies and award-winning songs that have earned them an international reputation. In 1988, Atlantic Records chairman Ahmet Ertegun heard them and signed them immediately to his record company. Their CD, "Walking on Ice," was released to critical acclaim in 1988. It's title track reached the Top 20 on the national AC charts and was a breakthrough NAC hit.

They immediately began work on their next CD "Bye Bye Route 66" which was released in January 1992. This CD spawned the singles "If You Could See Me Now" and "Bye Bye Route 66" which received rave reviews from radio and print media. It also earned them a nomination for "Best New Act" at the 1992 Boston Music Awards. This CD, produced by Fowler and Dean, is dedicated to the late Herb Ludwig and John Lennon. All songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney except Imagine by John Lennon and Johnny’s An Angel by Rex Fowler.

The third in the New England Americana Festival series will be held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston this Thursday, August 27th. Scheduled to perform are The Dennis Brennan Band, Brown Bird, Tripping Lily, John Colvert, Highway Ghosts, The Rationales, and Kingsley Flood. A donation of $10 will be requested. These shows have been held at the Hard Rock Cafe on the last Thursday of June and July, and this will be the final one of the series. The winners of the first three Battle of the Bands will be returning to The Elevens in Northampton tonight, Thursday, August 27th, to win a coveted spot at this year's Wormtown Music Festival. Ray passed away in his sleep on December 14th, 2009 at the age of 42. He was best known for his part as songwriter and guitarist in the band Miss Reed, which was hugely popular in both the Boston area and western Mass. in the 1990's. This is the third series of benefits for Ray Neades. The first was an all-star benefit show at the Sierra Grill in Northampton at the end of January, and the second was a three-day tribute at Church of Boston back in April. Proceeds go to help Ray's family with expenses incurred by his death.

Forty years ago this coming weekend, 600,000 flower children set sail for the Isle of Wight, an island off southern England, for a five-day event in search of peace, love, and understanding. Many people consider this to be the largest gathering for a rock music festival in history, although I would have to say that the Watkins Glen Summer Jam, which was held on Saturday, July 28th, 1973, and which I went to (and remember!!!) also drew 600,000 people.

The Regent Theatre in Arlington will be commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Isle of Wight with a three-day film festival all this weekend. Ticket prices are based on how many films you want to see. It is $10 for one film, $18 for two films, $24 for three films, $28 for four films; or $30 for five or more. Message to Love
Message to Love has captured on film what many have called the last great rock festival. In 1970, half a million flower children set sail for the Isle of Wight, an island of southern England for a five-day event in search of peace, love, and understanding. Amidst the chaos of what’s been called “Britain’s Woodstock” many of those hippie ideals were lost. This long-awaited feature film documents one of the most significant events in rock ‘n’ roll history. Two hours of footage highlights legendary performances by the WHO, Joan Baez, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Free, The Moody Blues, Ten Years After, and Jethro Tull – and the last stage performance of Jim Morrison with the Doors, and by Jimi Hendrix – 18 days before his death. Their music stands the test of time, as does this film, as it recalls the sheer hedonism of hippydom, the backstage backstabbing that almost wrecked the festival, and the final passing of an age of innocence – the last great event. The original WHO line-up performing a full live set in front of 600,000 people at the Isle of Wight Festival in UK in 1970. At 2 am on August 30th…The WHO appeared on stage and gave one of the most memorable concerts of their career. The filmed negative of the show, shot by Academy Award winning Director Murray Lerner, has been restored to the highest visual quality. The sound has now been remixed from its original 8 track tapes under the personal supervision of Pete Townshend at his Eel Pie Studios in London. (85 min.)

The Moody Blues: Threshold of a Dream
In late August 1970, shortly after the release of their album “A Question of Balance”, The Moody Blues took to the stage of the Isle of Wight Festival in front of an audience estimated at over half a million. The band were at their creative and commercial peak after a succession of albums that had enjoyed unprecedented global success. This film from award winning director Murray Lerner combines the band’s live performance from the 1970 festival with archive footage and new interviews with Graeme Edge, Justin Hayward, John Lodge and Mike Pinder setting the band’s performance in the context of the time. (79 min.)

Emerson, Lake and Palmer: The Birth of a Band
In August 1970, 600,000 people, the largest audience in the history of pop music to date, attended the Isle of Wight festival and experienced the debut performance of a new “supergroup”: Emerson, Lake, & Palmer. With a spectacular stage show that included real cannons being fired over the heads of the audience, they became overnight stars with the press raving about their virtuosity and daring. Intercut with the live footage from the show, this film also features brand new interviews with Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer, as well as their then-manager John Gaydon, and creates a vivid portrait of the birth of a band. Jethro Tull: Nothing Is Easy
Sunday August 30th, 1970, 600,000 people, the largest audience in the history of pop music to date, were about to experience on of Jethro Tull’s most impressive performances at the Isle of Wight Festival. “Nothing Is Easy” is directed by award winning filmmaker Murray Lerner, who also directed and partly shot the original footage of the festival. It contains film of the band’s outstanding live performance combined with a brand new interview with Ian Anderson, describing the dramatic, almost violent, festival moods, both backstage and in the audience. As he said “it was a watershed time” between peace and love on one hand, and hooliganism on the other. This is supplemented by early career archive footage including Jethro Tull’s performance of “A Song For Jeffrey” on the “The Rolling Stones’ Rock and Roll Circus”, which features Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) during his very short stint as the band’s guitarist. (80 min.)

Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight
This film documents the guitarist’s legendary performance before 600,000 people at this massive outdoor music and arts festival in August of 1970. This unforgettable concert film experience draws heavily upon Academy Award(tm) winning Director Murray Lerner’s vast archive of previously unseen performance footage and presents some of Hendrix’s finest ever concert performances, including extended takes of “Machine Gun”, “Red House”, and other favorites such as “All Along the Watchtower”, “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” and a unique medley of “God Save the Queen” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. New interviews with Jimi Hendrix Experience band members Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and others set the stage for the concert footage that follows. In addition to providing the definitive look at one of the landmark events in Hendrix’s storied career, Blue Wild Angel features a soundtrack newly mixed by Hendrix’s original recording engineer Eddie Kramer. Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue
On August 29th, 1970 Miles Davis and his band played to 600,000 people at The Isle of Wight Festival in the UK. When asked the title of his one track set, Miles said “call it anything”. This documentary dramatizes the difficult transition Miles went through during his change to an electric period in the face of extremely negative reactions from the jazz establishment. It includes in-depth interviews and musical tributes from many of his sidemen and other musicians including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell, Keith Jarrett, and Dave Liebman; features excerpts from many of his classic performances including “Bitches Brew” and culminates in the legendary full 38 minute concert of the Isle of Wight. (87 min.)

Leonard Cohen: Live at the Isle of Wight
Nearly 40 summers ago on August 31, 1970, 35-year-old Leonard Cohen was awakened at 2 a.m. from a nap in his trailer and brought onstage to perform with his band at the third annual Isle Of Wight music festival. The audience of 600,000 was in a fiery and frenzied mood, after turning the festival into a political arena, trampling the fences, setting fire to structures and equipment – and stoked by the most incendiary performance of Jimi Hendrix’s career. As Cohen followed Hendrix’s set, onlookers and (fellow festival headliners) Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins and others stood sidestage in awe as the Canadian folksinger-songwriter-poet-novelist quietly tamed the crowd. Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Murray Lerner (From Mao To Mozart, Festival, Message To Love), perfectly captured Cohen’s performance. Experience the energy, drama and magic of the 1970 Isle of Wight music Festival through the songs, musings and poetry of a true legend- Leonard Cohen. (64 min.)
By the time Murray Lerner graduated from Harvard University, he had already co-produced and co-directed a full-length feature film that was LIFE Magazine's "Movie of the Week" and helped co-fund the first ?lm production society in the school's history. Lerner felt that film should be a unified art and taught himself every aspect of filmmaking, an ideal he continues to prize to this day as an active writer, director, cinematographer and editor.

There will be two benefit concerts for The Institute for the Musical Arts in Goshen, a non-profit which supports women and girls in music and music-related business. The first will be on Saturday, September 11th at 8pm. John Sebastian, who was the leader of The Lovin' Spoonful back in the 1960s, will be performing solo and speaking about his life as a musician. The second will be on Saturday, October 2nd at 8pm. Patty Larkin will be performing. Ms. Larkin just released a retrospective collection of 25 love songs in celebration of her 25 years in the recording industry. Singer-songwriter June Millington, the IMA's co-founder, will be opening.

Both shows will take place in the Institute for Musical Arts Big Barn, located at 165 Cape Street, Route 112, in Goshen. A suggested donation of $15-$50 per ticket is being requested. Shelburne Falls resident and MPress Recording Artist Seth Glier is once again participating in The Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world’s largest arts festival. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place in Scotland's capital during three weeks every August alongside several other arts and cultural festivals, collectively known as the Edinburgh Festival, of which the Fringe is by far the largest.

Fringe 2009 sold 1,859,235 tickets for 34,265 performances of 2,098 shows in 265 venues, over 25 days, for an average of over 74,000 admissions and 1,300 performances per day. There were an estimated 18,901 performers, from 60 countries.

The Westford Rotary presents the fifth annual Blues 'N' Brews Festival at the Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford this Saturday, August 21st, 12noon-7pm. Performing will be Ken Macy, Smokehouse Lightning, Tokyo Tramps, Danny Banks and his All-Star Band featuring "Monster" Mike Welch, Bellevue Cadillac, and Sugar Blue.

Tickets are $35 at the gate. Children under 12 are free. The festival will be held rain or shine. It will be hosted by Carter Alan, host of "Sunday Morning Blues" on WZLX 100.9FM HD-1 in Boston, and the person who programs Radio Mojo for WZLX HD-2. Carter Alan is the Dean of the "College of Musical Knowledge" and someone I very much respect.

Beneficiaries of the funds raised from this year's festival include the Multiple Sclerosis Society (Blister Buddies), Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Domestic Violence Services Network, Massachusetts National Guard Family Support Fund, Friends Forever International Peace Program, and various scholarships and projects supported by the Westford Rotary Club

Boston Band Crush, a daily blog that chronicles the Boston music scene (and which I get much of my information from), presents the second annual One Night Band show at the Middle East down in Cambridge on Saturday, August 21st, starting at 8pm.

BBC selected 40 musicians, whom they have interviewed in their blog over the past 40 days. These 40 musicians will be gathering early Saturday morning and broken up into random groups of five. Then these eight new groups will have all day to work out a set of four songs, which they will perform at the ME on Saturday night.The fun begins at 8pm. Among the new releases at Newbury Comics this past Tuesday, August 17th, were CDs by Duke Robillard and Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs. Duke Robillard's new CD is "Passport to the Blues" and is available for $11.88, and Ray LaMontagne's new CD "The Lord's Willing and the Creek Don't Rise" is available for $12.88 at all Newbury Comics locations.

Of course, the title of the new Ray LaMontagne CD was the line that Charles Laquidara used to end his "Big Mattress" show with every morning on WBCN, and the "Creek Don't Rise" portion refers to the Creek Indians, not a creek that holds water. I'm wondering if Ray was able to get WBCN up in Maine while he was growing up. It's possible. When I was living in Beverly on the North Shore of Boston, I used to listen to The Blimp back when it was at 107.9FM in Lewiston-Auburn, although I would have to turn my radio around to negate WXKS out of Medford. Of course those were the good old days. Now that The Blimp is at 102.9FM out of Portland, and is 100,000 watts, you can get it practically everywhere. But now The Blimp is owned by Clear Channel, so nobody really cares any more, especially with WCLZ at 98.9 in North Yarmouth.

Actually, The Blimp is most likely one of the three most powerful radio stations in New England. I can get it in three or four times a summer by skip way out here in Amherst and Northampton. And I can also get quite clearly WGBH, 89.7FM, which has its transmitter on top of Great Blue Hill (hence the call letters) in Milton. But probably the most powerful station in New England is a country music station called "The Peak," WPKQ, 103.7FM in North Conway, NH, which has its transmitter on top of Mount Washington. Imagine being the person who has to scrape ice off that antenna in the winter!

Club Passim in Harvard Square in Cambridge will once again be having its Campfire Weekend over the Labor Day weekend. The four day indoor folk and Americana music festival begins at 6pm on Friday, September 3rd, and at 12noon on Saturday, September 4th, Sunday, September 5th, and Monday, September 6th. There will be a 30th anniversary show of the ZONE Art Center at the Canal Gallery, 380 Dwight Street in Holyoke, on Saturday, September 11th at 7pm. Performing will be 8th Route Army, The Malarians, Bamboo Steamers, Art Kritics, Donut Kings, and Thrill Pillow.

The Malarians re-formed and played at Church of Boston, The Sierra Grill in Northampton, and the Lucky Dog Music Hall in Worcester back in mid-June. Now Mal says:

Yeah, I'm re-returning to the Valley for two shows next month. After the success of the Tour of Route 9, it's The Mini-Tour of Route 5!

The ZONE was the epicenter of the western Mass. punk scene in the '80s, a non-profit arts space in downtown Springfield that put on semi-monthly all-ages shows featuring an eclectic mix of local bands, as well as providing gallery exhibitions for all manner of area artists. The city let the ZONE die rather than ensuring its future with a little funding, and instead of a funky arts space where kids could go see music in an alcohol- and drug-free environment, they got more strip clubs and lame discos.

The Malarians' 1990 live album, the aptly titled "Finished In This Town," was recorded there. The Malarians' "In the Cool Room" and the 2-for-1 deluxe reissue of "Know" and "Finished In This Town" are available as mp3 albums on amazon.com and iTunes.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland will devote its 15th annual American Music Masters series to Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew and New Orleans’ role in the birth of rock 'n roll.

“Walking to New Orleans: The Music of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew,” scheduled for Nov. 8-13, consists of evening lectures, interviews and film screenings at the museum; a day-long conference at Case Western Reserve University; and a culminating tribute concert at Cleveland’s Palace Theater in PlayhouseSquare. Confirmed performers include Bartholomew, Lloyd Price, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Robert Parker and the Rebirth Brass Band.

The American Music Masters program, the Hall of Fame’s signature series, spotlights key figures in the evolution of popular music whose stories and contributions warrant wider recognition. Past honorees include Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Lead Belly, Hank Williams, Louis Jordan, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Jerry Lee Lewis, Les Paul and Janis Joplin.

I asked Ray Mason to reflect on his life as a musician, and this is what he came up with.

RAY MASON: IN HIS OWN WORDS

I was born in Holyoke, MA in 1950 and grew up there for the first 20 or so years and then moved all the way up the road to Northampton! We always had some 45 record playing and I remember starting to buy singles of my own in 1959 at W. T. Grants on High St. in Holyoke. Those singles were definitely my earliest influences: Everly Brothers, Sam Cooke, Duane Eddy....the list goes on.

I started playing guitar around 1964 when I received my 1st Silvertone (with the amp in the case) as a gift for my 8th grade graduation. I took lessons right near where we lived in the housing project at George Crete's Music Center on Dwight St. in Holyoke. At that time I wanted to learn Beatles' tunes but ended up being taught "Down In The Valley".

I was never too good at copying records or what other guitarists were doing so that's how I ended up starting to write my own songs. Watching The beatles on Ed Sullivan I was amazed at how long George Harrison's fingers were and the chords he played just boggled my mind! I loved it!!

My band started in one form or another around 1980-81 and the Lonesomes in 1985. At that point (80-81) I figured I had been stockpiling tunes and wanted to see how they might sound with a band. I was also playing solo gigs with just myself and the Silvertone. Meanwhile Jim Armenti & I had been playing in a local country band and decided to start the Lonesomes in 85' as a side project. Now here we are 25 years later!

I started writing tunes in the 1960's because (as I said above) I didn't know how to copy records. The first song I wrote was called "Never" and I had my first song copywritten in 1967 called "Nothing Seems To Happen". Very appropriate title! Some tunes I write are true and autobiographical while others are totally fabricated but still tell a story or make a comment on everyday life's little things. The last so many years or so I've been filling up notebooks with song titles and then going back and writing the song. Something about that that makes sense to me.

I started playing in my first band in 1966 (The Gladiators out of Holyoke) and yes, there really have been over 6,000 gigs since. Some of my all time favorites were opening many shows (since 1972) for NRBQ. What a treat to play and then kick back and watch your favorite band all in one night. They've been such an influence and inspiration. So many other gigs like the Newport Folk Festival and Prairie Home Companion with the Lonesome Brothers. Getting to play bass with Steve Forbert and Willie Nile at the Iron Horse. Getting to sit in on guitar with Alejandro Escovedo and James McMurtry. Having Jimmie Dale Gilmore sit in with the Lonesome Brothers at The Basement in Northampton. All the gigs with my band (Frank Marsh, Stephen Desaulniers & Tom Shea) and the Lonesome Brothers (Jim Armenti & Tom Shea). Working in the studio with Jim Weeks on many recordings. Many great opening slots for The Band, Warren Zevon, Chris Whitley, Marshall Crenshaw, Graham Parker, Nils Lofgren, The Bottle Rockets, Yo La Tengo......the list goes on. There's way too many to even begin mentioning! As far as tough gigs go I remember playing in Rock Island, IL around 1969 or 70'. Six nights a week, six sets a night from 9 p.m. - 3 a.m. Now that was work! I also remember playing two sets solo outside in a gazebo up near Albany where it was so cold I had to play while wearing my winter jacket. All the people sat in their cars watching me from a distance. That's one I wouldn't want to play again!

I don't want to harp on that music was better back when because everyone seems to be majorly influenced by the music that they grew up listening to. There's always great music to seek out and listen to but the records I always go back to are the ones that have been part of my life for a long time. Don't know much about ProTools and technology!

We're hoping that the Iron Horse show on September 10th will be a party for everyone who has shown us any kind of support over all these years. It is much appreciated. We're just trying to play and write the best songs we can. It's always been that way. We don't talk about it. I suppose approaching 60 is a big one but what I'm really looking forward to is the prospect of some senior citizen discounts!
