The next seven days probably has the most amount of shows of the year. No matter where you live in the Commonwealth, there is bound to be a live show that will interest you. I will try to break everything down for you.
While I'm at it, I will also warn you of the Extreme Makeover I had to do to the LISTINGS edition of the Weekly Band E-Mail. I know it shifts the burden to the reader to find out details of shows, but it was becoming more than I could handle. With that said, take a deep breath and read onward.

Everybody in western Mass. is buzzing about the surprise re- reunion of Mal Thursday and The Malarians. The band will be playing at the Sierra Grille in Northampton tonight, Thursday, September 9th at 10pm. Admission is $3, and it is a 21+ show. The Malarians will also be a part of the 30th anniversary show of the ZONE Arts Center at the Canal Gallery in Holyoke on Saturday, September 11th. More on that show below.

The Rosebud Bar, which is behind the Rosebud Diner in Davis Square in Somerville, has a great lineup this weekend. On Thursday, September 9th at 9pm is Andrea Gillis. On Friday, September 10th at 8:30 pm is Muck and the Mires, Jay Allen and the Arch Criminals, and The Dirty Truckers. And on Saturday, September 11th at 8:30pm is 28 Degrees Taurus, Magic Shoppe, and Miars. Admission is $5 at the door, and the Rosebud is a 21+ venue.

This summer's series of concerts at Mountain Park in Holyoke end with two shows this weekend. On Friday, Sept 10th will be The Disco Biscuits, RJD2, and Mimosa. Gates are at 4:30pm, and the show begins at 6pm. Tickets are $27.50 And the final show will be on Monday, September 13th, with Vampire Weekend, Beach House, and Dum Dum Girls. Gates are at 5:30pm, and the show begins at 7pm. Tickets are $32.50.
All children must have tickets and be accompanied by an adult. You may buy tickets online in advance at http://www.iheg.com/

There will be a special benefit show at the Moose Lodge in Salem (Mass) this Friday, September 10th, 6-11pm. Performing will be Revolver and Cocaine Tongue. All proceeds from this event will go towards a rollaway ramp, a vehicle for transport, and other vital equipment needed for the care of 8 year old Tanis Price, who has been afflicted with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy. The fifth annual New England Blues Festival will be at Battis Field in Middleborough on Saturday, September 11th. Gates open at 11am, and music begins at 12noon. Performing will be Wolf and the Jam Daddies, Bogged Down, Wood Spirit Band, Mark T. Small, and the Dan Lawson Band. General admission tickets are $25 at the gate, although you will receive $5 off if you donate a coat or a jacket. The huge Life is Good(r) Festival will be held at Prowse Farm in Canton on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th. There will be three stages each day. Performers on the Life is Good stage include Mavis Staples, Ozomatli, Ziggy Marley, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Guster, and Jason Mraz. Performers on the Good Vibes stage include Will Dailey and the Rivals, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Toubab Krewe, OK Go, and Corinne Bailey Rae. The Life is Good Kids Foundation helps kids overcome life-threatening challenges such as violence, illness and extreme poverty. The Playmakers Initiative provides training, resources and support to the adults dedicated to caring for these children so that all involved lead healthier, more joyful lives.
Every year from 2004-2009, a Life is Good Festival was held to benefit Project Joy, a unique and innovative grassroots nonprofit. Project Joy had been addressing early childhood trauma through the healing power of play for over twenty years, building a community of committed Playmakers — frontline childcare professionals dedicated to the healthy development of children in need. The more Life is Good experienced this nonprofit's joyful approach and talented staff, the more they felt a kinship between the organizations. And the more they saw its transformative impact on the lives of children, the more they were wholeheartedly committed to advancing its work.
Organizers say "We signaled that commitment in a historic and dramatic way in early 2010 as we officially joined forces. Project Joy is now part of the Life is Good Kids Foundation, becoming the active service arm to carry out the Foundation's mission. Together we can transform a generation of kids sidelined by personal trauma into enthusiastic players in the game of life."

Starlab at 32 Prospect Street in Somerville will be having an End of Summer Bash this Saturday, September 11th. The day begins with a yard sale at 12:30pm, and music beginning at 4pm. Performing will be Movers and Shakers, Viva Viva, Needy Visions, The Cold Beat, and Banditas. A donation of $5-$10 will be requested.
Back in July Somerville’s Starlab practice space and recording studio had a fund raising BBQ and outdoor show to help raise money to knock out some debt and fancy up the place after water damaged the basement back in the spring. That first BBQ raised $1,500, and this Saturday's BBQ hopes to raise just as much, although it will be up against some stiff competition.

The Lizard Lounge in Cambridge will have Willbury's Weekend on Friday, September 10th and Saturday, September 11th.. Brendan Boogie will br Roy Orbison, Jason Dunn will be George Harrison, Kingsley Flood will be Bob Dylan, Mercy James will be Jeff Lynne, and Spirit Kid will be Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Each person/band will transform themselves into their persona for a set, and then the night will close with a fantasy set by the [Traveling] Willlburys.

There is a new brick-and-mortars record store in Northampton. It is called Feeding Tube Records, and is at 90 King Street in Northampton. Feeding Tube already has a store at 150 Pleasant Street, Suite 235, in Easthampton, where owner Ted Lee has been selling used vinyl, 7" records, and cassette tapes, much like Mystery Train in Amherst does.
The King Street store will open on Friday, September 10th at 10am. It will mainly be a distribution point for new vinyl, but will also carry used stuff like the Easthampton store does. For more information, go to their website, http://www.feedingtuberecords.com/

With a national release on August 10, "Many Hands: Family Music for Haiti" is the first release from Spare the Rock Records. This unique collection of songs is filled with uplifting messages from some of today’s very best family musicians. After the January 12th, 2010 earthquake that destroyed much of the Haitian capital, family musician Dean Jones (Dog on Fleas) found himself feeling helpless and desperately wanting to help the people of Haiti. Having close friends in Haiti and feeling a deep love and respect for the music from the region, Jones felt the need to create something that could help the ongoing rebuilding effort.
The idea for Many Hands came to him in the middle of the night, and the very next day several of his fellow family musicians signed on. “When I had the idea for the Many Hands CD, I knew without a doubt that I could count on the big-hearted kindie community.” said Jones. “The generosity and the amazing work of all the musicians and everyone involved definitely exceeded my initial expectations.”
Almost all of the tracks on the album are previously unreleased, most of them recorded especially for this release. The gathering of artists featured here is a strong assortment of the unique and special talents creating and performing for today’s all ages audiences, from the legendary Pete Seeger to family hip-hop star Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. In addition, everyone involved in the process of getting this album out into the world from replication to distribution has also either drastically discounted or donated their services. Proceeds from this release will benefit the Haitian People’s Support Project and their long-standing work to help the people of Haiti.
"Many Hands" is the debut album of Spare the Rock Records, founded by kindie rock connoisseur Bill Childs. “After speaking with Dean it was immediately obvious to me that this would be a great record, and, just as importantly, that it would have the potential to help keep people’s attention on the ongoing recovery of Haiti,” recalls Childs on how the partnership came to fruition. “Dean asked for some help reaching out to a few artists, and that just naturally flowed into my helping the record get a wider release; ultimately, that meant starting a label.”
Childs produces, with his kids, the weekly radio show Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child, which is heard every Saturday morning, 7-9am, on Valley Free Radio, WXOJ-LP, 103.3FM in Northampton, and every Saturday morning, 8-10am, on WRSI, 93.9FM in Northampton. Bill also writes about kids’ music for various parenting magazines and has produced numerous kids’ concerts and is the co-founder of KindieFest, the family music conference.

The three co-owners of the Paradise Rock Club - Bob Dunne, Declan Mehigan of Old Trafford Inc., and Don Law's Boston Opera House Ventures LLC - have spent close to $500,000 renovating the 33-year-old club. The chief complaint of both the bands and the audience over the years has been a large pole that was directly in front of the lead singer.
Since the pole could not be moved because it was basically holding the structure up, it was decided to build a brand new stage 15 feet to the left as the audience views it. The main entrance was also moved closer to Agganis Way. Renovations took three months, and the Paradise re-opened on Wednesday, September 1st with a show featuring Marina and the Diamonds..

Back in July Somerville’s Starlab practice space and recording studio had a fund raising BBQ and outdoor show to help raise money to knock out some debt and fancy up the place after water damaged the basement back in the spring. That first BBQ raised $1,500, and this Saturday's BBQ hopes to raise just as much, although it will be up against some stiff competition.

There is a new brick-and-mortars record store in Northampton. It is called Feeding Tube Records, and is at 90 King Street in Northampton. Feeding Tube already has a store at 150 Pleasant Street, Suite 235, in Easthampton, where owner Ted Lee has been selling used vinyl, 7" records, and cassette tapes, much like Mystery Train in Amherst does.
The King Street store will open on Friday, September 10th at 10am. It will mainly be a distribution point for new vinyl, but will also carry used stuff like the Easthampton store does. For more information, go to their website, http://www.feedingtuberecords.com/

With a national release on August 10, "Many Hands: Family Music for Haiti" is the first release from Spare the Rock Records. This unique collection of songs is filled with uplifting messages from some of today’s very best family musicians. After the January 12th, 2010 earthquake that destroyed much of the Haitian capital, family musician Dean Jones (Dog on Fleas) found himself feeling helpless and desperately wanting to help the people of Haiti. Having close friends in Haiti and feeling a deep love and respect for the music from the region, Jones felt the need to create something that could help the ongoing rebuilding effort.
The idea for Many Hands came to him in the middle of the night, and the very next day several of his fellow family musicians signed on. “When I had the idea for the Many Hands CD, I knew without a doubt that I could count on the big-hearted kindie community.” said Jones. “The generosity and the amazing work of all the musicians and everyone involved definitely exceeded my initial expectations.”
Almost all of the tracks on the album are previously unreleased, most of them recorded especially for this release. The gathering of artists featured here is a strong assortment of the unique and special talents creating and performing for today’s all ages audiences, from the legendary Pete Seeger to family hip-hop star Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. In addition, everyone involved in the process of getting this album out into the world from replication to distribution has also either drastically discounted or donated their services. Proceeds from this release will benefit the Haitian People’s Support Project and their long-standing work to help the people of Haiti.
"Many Hands" is the debut album of Spare the Rock Records, founded by kindie rock connoisseur Bill Childs. “After speaking with Dean it was immediately obvious to me that this would be a great record, and, just as importantly, that it would have the potential to help keep people’s attention on the ongoing recovery of Haiti,” recalls Childs on how the partnership came to fruition. “Dean asked for some help reaching out to a few artists, and that just naturally flowed into my helping the record get a wider release; ultimately, that meant starting a label.”
Childs produces, with his kids, the weekly radio show Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child, which is heard every Saturday morning, 7-9am, on Valley Free Radio, WXOJ-LP, 103.3FM in Northampton, and every Saturday morning, 8-10am, on WRSI, 93.9FM in Northampton. Bill also writes about kids’ music for various parenting magazines and has produced numerous kids’ concerts and is the co-founder of KindieFest, the family music conference.

The three co-owners of the Paradise Rock Club - Bob Dunne, Declan Mehigan of Old Trafford Inc., and Don Law's Boston Opera House Ventures LLC - have spent close to $500,000 renovating the 33-year-old club. The chief complaint of both the bands and the audience over the years has been a large pole that was directly in front of the lead singer.
Since the pole could not be moved because it was basically holding the structure up, it was decided to build a brand new stage 15 feet to the left as the audience views it. The main entrance was also moved closer to Agganis Way. Renovations took three months, and the Paradise re-opened on Wednesday, September 1st with a show featuring Marina and the Diamonds..
