77.0.1 Here is Mark Sheehan's review of Round Four of The Happy Valley
Showdown, held at The Elevens in Northampton on Sunday, January 25th.

Round 4 - The True Jacqueline, Abeja, Eric Hnatow, Hunter Gatherer, World's Greatest Dad

MC Amanda happened to be in one of the performing bands this round so
she relinquished her duities to Mr. Thomas Campbell. Tom did a great
job getting things organized and kicking the night off though at the
beginning we forgot to introduce and thank our judges that evening:
Jeff Bujak, solo artist extraordinaire; O'Brian Tomalin, owner of
The Sierra Grille; Erik Allen of The Amity Front, Thane Thomsen of The
Figments and a local legend; and finally Northampton's Keith Moon- Roger
Knight of The Novels.

The order was drawn minutes before the show and THE TRUE JACQUELINE drew
the dreaded 1st spot. Judge Jeff Bujak had just partaken in some
earthly festivities and the surprise dub/reggae tinted New Wave set was
a surprise and won Jeff's heart, he had them for first place. He said
they were the tightest most interesting band of the night. They covered
The Magnetic Fields and their take on it was almost note for note, a
real boss act! I loved them and they won over al ot of new fans that I
hope check them out the next time they play and I know they're
scheduled March 1st at The Elevens, check them out if ya haven't yet.
They remind me of the TV show Square Pegs that I used to watch as a kid.

ABEJA
went second. They put on the best set I've ever seen from them. I thought
for sure they'd won the night. I didn't see how anyone could follow
that set. I mean, yes, they chose to cover "Dry The Rain" by The Beta
Band which is one of my all time favorite songs and they did it fuckin
justice! They also loaded up an all-star cast of players featuring some
long standing local players that I look up to as far as their advances
in the music industry-playing, booking & talent. They're playing
again March 14th at The Elevens with Friends Of Yours, World's
Greatest Dad, and possibly The True Jacqueline. A fine example of what
The Happy Valley Showdown is for: Four bands who have never played together
will now share the stage and judging from those who have seen all those
bands at The HVS they should draw a good crowd. They started the set
with an Abeja classic, engaging the crowd by handing out shakers and
egg shakers and asking everyone to sing along. GREAT! Beautiful female
vocals, her husband on guitar, with bass, cello, flute, drums & more
guitar. Tight, huge and emotionally provoking. Abeja took second place for
the night.

ERIC HANTOW
went third and all week I'd wondered how he was going to do a cover as he
usuallly is all electronic sequencing/no vocals. He covered The Ramones
"Cretin Hop" and electronically altered his vocals and had loaded the
melody into his hitmaking machines...brilliant!! Eric had the crowds
vote and when tallied against the judges numbers came in third for the
night. He had the crowd going and towards the last song cloaked himself
in a lit up Hoodie with flashing Christmas lights. What a show, Eric also
won some new fans!

HUNTER GATHERER took the
stage fourth and unfortunately play a brand of swirly beautiful sleepy
time music better suited for the beginning or very end of a night. The
people that got it dug it and those drunk and looking to rock came in
on their cover of Black Sabbath's "Into The Void" which jerked the
audience to attention! Great cover, great band, ask Bard for a
copy of the album and put it on when you're feeling melancholy, perfect
music to reflect on the meaning of your life too. Another favorite of
Jeff Bujak. This act won't play out often so see them when you get the
chance.

WORLD"S GREATEST DAD
went last and as I said, someone had to do something big to take the
show from Abeja and WGD exploded onto the stage! An eight piece band
featuring members from Cyclub, Thungs, OUCH, Don't , The Strangelings,
Teacher, Ideal Rifle, Primate Fiasco, Nice, Nice, and a borrowed
drummer from Los Hijos Unicos these guys and girls have chosen to go
somwhere adventerous musically playing flute, clarinet, omnichord,
violin, guitar, bass, drums. They are like a mini chamber orchestra with
weird loveble pop songs that make you laugh and dance within the
confines of a seat at Symphony Hall. They covered "Paint It Black" by
The Rolling Stones and the song turned into the classic towards a "Hava
Nagila" and a scene from a Bollywood movie musical skit! Wow! They
came in first and move on to the final round on February 15th.

77.0.2 The 51st annual Grammy(r) Awards were held at the Staples Center in Los
Angeles on Sunday, February 8th. To everyone's shock, the
collaboration between Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, "Raising Sand,"
released on the independent Rounder Records
label, won five Grammys. Rounder Records was started in a Somerville
apartment back in 1970 by by Tufts University students Ken Irwin and
Bill Nowlin, along with partner Marian Leighton-Levy of Clark
University. Rounder is now based in Burlington, and has since grown
into one of the three largest independent record labels in the
country. Here are the awards "Raising Sand" won:

77.0.4 The Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center in Cambridge has awarded
$25,000 worth of grants to area musicians through the newly set-up Iguana Music Fund.
A generous donor who understands the financial struggles many
independent artists are facing has donated funds for beginning or
established musicians with a connection to New England. In January,
awards of $500-$2,000 were granted to musicians to facilitate the
professional and artistic development of their musical endeavors.

The Iguana Music Fund grants were made to individual artists for specific
career building projects. Areas of support may include (but are not
limited to) recording or manufacturing assistance, publicity or
marketing support, instrument repair or replacement, special projects,
and other specific activities promoting artistic and/or professional
growth.

The fund is open to all professional musicians with ties
to the New England area, either by residence or through regular touring
activities. Final decisions were made through a committee through
Passim, and the recipients are:

Kate Klim
Lloyd Thayer
Nate Borofsky
Randall Williams
Ruth Mendelson
Sean Staples
Tom Bianchi
Beth Colegrove
Chuck E. Costa
Jason Myles Goss
Kier Byrnes
Tim Eriksen
Miss Tess
Paddy League
Rose Polenzani
Sarah Michel
Anne Heaton

The Iguana Music Fund will continue, and will be accepting applications
again beginning at Passim's Memorial Day Campfire. Applications can be
requested through Passim's website, which is http://www.passimcenter.org

77.0.5 Big D and the Kids Table will be opening for The English Beat at the
Paradise Rock Club in Boston on Thursday, February 12th. But this will
be a particularly special Big D show, because drummer Max McVeety will
be joining the band for the first time in ten years. Max will also be
sitting in with Big D at Lupo's in Providence, RI on Friday, February
13th.

77.0.6 Even though the new House of Blues on Lansdowne
Street in Boston has its official grand opening on Thursday, February
19th, the actual first shows will be this coming Monday and Tuesday,
February 16th and 17th. On Monday night will be Till We Die, Breathe,
and Crimson Bile, and on Tuesday night will be Kid:Nap:Kin. Both shows
are free. The House of Blues will officially open on February 19th
with a reunion of the J. Geils Band.

Live Nation Inc. and Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc. announced
plans to merge Tuesday, combining the nation's biggest concert promoter
with the largest seller of tickets for live entertainment.

The new company, which will be called Live Nation Entertainment, will have
a value of about $2.5 billion based on current prices and excluding net
debt. The merger is expected to close in the second half of the year.
