This week's Song of the Week is a real nice cover of the Specials' classic "A Message To You Rudy" by the Boston reggae band Guns of Navarone. The band will be playing at the Grey Hound Pub in Worcester on Friday, March 7th, and at Church in Boston on Tuesday, March 17th (St. Patrick's Day). 79.0.1 Here is Mark Sheehan's review of Week Five of The Happy Valley Showdown, held at the Elevens in Northampton on Sunday, March 8th.

White Problems; Super Happy Wicked Awesome Fun Time; Petulant Child; Our Mothers Are Gods; The Young Flyers; Whistle Jacket

Judges: Matt Silberstein (Swillmerchants); Shannon (The Thungs/Others); Philip Price and Flora Reed (Winterpills); Mike Esss (Space Captain)

As we entered the last week of final 1st rounds excitement was in the air!

White Problems Went first. I love this band! It's hard to take your eyes off the singer Matt, he has a stage presence remeniscent of punk or post punk bands from the late 70's /early 80's and appears to barely be able to stand up onstage with the mic stand as his only means of support. The toubled artist. That aura that something terribly wrong lies under the surface of this beautiful art he's passing to us. Straining to croon out the barely audible, slurring lyrics of a distressed soul. His vocals are not clear and maybe they give too much away and that is why the band buries them beneath disjointed flurries of sonic bliss? f you see a bulletin or a flyer that says WHITE PROBLEMS are playing ya probably should go check this band out for yourselves.

SUPER HAPPY WICKED AWESOME FUN TIME went second and this was the best performance from this new band since their incarnation less than a year ago. Their cover of The Doors "Five To One" held the audience in the palm of their hands! The three originals they did were tightened up and awesome and they even kept their "hit" song locked away for the evening! Who knows?..If they'd brought out the hit song maybe they woulda came in first instead of second...a great showing none the less. The name says it all, get drunk and sing a long!

PETULANT CHILD went third and along with a couple other bands in these showdowns, they make it a showcase of "new(ish)" bands. They're included because they're a great band a lot of people may not have gotten a chance to see and as the "scene'' has a breath of fresh air these days, it's time to get some of these bands a fresh new audience. They covered The Replacements "I Will Dare". This band has moments that capture The Pixies and The Minutemen.

OUR MOTHERS ARE GODS went fourth. This band features members of Futurpunk! and Rabbit Rabbit, both of which started on and around the time of the first Happy Valley Showdown last year. One of the many reasons I like to do this series-because it kick starts alot of bands into getting a quick, tight set together and getting out onstage in front of a sizable audience. Rob (Futurepunk! guitarist) takes the center of attention with this project with vocal duties and guitar held down by a super tight rythm section. It's not as heavy a band as I thought it was going to be but full of much more pop sensibility, bouncy, catchy, 80's Joy Division, New Wave and PostPunk inspired influences sans any electronics that would seem to be right at home in this band if they decided to add that at a later date. They play Sierra Grille at the end of March and I can't wait to see this band as it develops.

THE YOUNG FLYERS went fifth and exploded onto the stage full of smiles and energy and seemed to have none of the western mass. 90's influence that saturates the area. I'm reminded of The Hold Steady when they play. High energy straight ahead rock n' roll with almost spoken or preached storyline lyrics. They could add Clarence Clemons of The E Street Band and he'd comfortable here. They have a secret weapon on lead guitar and this kid's main job is to just shred leads all night...awesome! They covered Frank Black's "Freedom Rock" from Teenager Of The Year, get that album if ya don't already own it, since these guys covered it I've been listening to it all over again. The Young Flyers are tight, polished, shiny barroom rock n' roll and stand out in an area full of indie and experimental bands...and that's another reason our local music scene is unparralled, we have it all right here!! Fans of The Young Flyers arrived in TYF's t-shirts asking when they were playing long before The Elevens even opened it's doors, it helps to fill a room and they came in first place!

WHISTLE JACKET played last and came in third. I love this band! If you love Daniel Johnston and Pavement then you will too. A fun, fun, fun band they make you smile, laugh and dance! They ended up in the Showdown as more than half the band moved to Northampton from Boston and band leader Micheal Leydon was born at Cooley Dickinson. Hospital. tt was great to have a huge audience for them to play too and I encourage everyone to never ever miss one of their sets again. I've brought them to play here for over a year and will keep doing so until they deny me!!

79.0.2 All three members of The Cheaters Club from Northampton have decided to take a rest from The Cheaters Club for a while, and have started another band with a completely different kind of music called Sylphid. Sylphid's music is "entirely improvised, 100 percent electronics." Sylphid will make their first appearance at The Elevens in Northampton on Sunday, March 1st.

79.0.3 Avi and Celia begin a Tuesday night residency at TOAD in Cambridge on March 3rd.
